A large part of Mevicon's research has been focused on establishing the
scalability of the formed thin film shell concepts to apertures of
sufficient size for eventual space applications. This has been numerically
achieved for spherical, on-axis parabolic, and off axis parabolic shells
of considerable dimensions (upwards of 20 m+ shells have been shown to
survive the expected worst case operation acceleration loads), and other
key details such as lab demonstration of self deployment of the largest
available shell sizes (0.5 to 1 m size) have been performed. Work in this
area is currently transitioning to addressing readiness for flight issues
in more detail, demonstration of manufacturing scalability efforts and
focusing down on early flight demonstration prototype development.
