Mevicon, Inc. is a small growing business located in Sunnyvale, California that was founded in 2002 with the goal of developing high end space and terrestrial products based on our pioneering thin film shell technology. Due to continued growth in our funded R&D backlog and growing interest in our "Strength Through Curvature" approach to realizing compactly stowable, passively self deploying, self rigidizing thin-film reflective shells and structures for RF to optical reflectors, we are currently looking for qualified candidates to join us. R&D Engineer

We are currently looking for hardware focused engineers to ramp up our shell related R&D and product development activities. Detailed knowledge and practical experience in one or more of the following technical areas is required:

  • Mechanical Design/Prototype/Test
  • Finite Element Analysis Driven Design
  • Actuation/Metrology/Control
  • Test/Process Automation, or
  • Relevant Application Testing (RF, Solar, Optics)

Experience in any of the following application areas is an added advantage:

  • Reflective RF Apertures
  • Solar Concentrators
  • Reflective Optics/Telescopes
  • Solar Concentrators
  • Thin Film Solar Cells, Blanket Solar Arrays
  • Space Hardware Design/Development/Demonstration

The ideal candidate will combine small company and/or R&D experience with expertise in one of the above technical areas and at least one application area. Excellent writing/documentation skills, test planning/execution/post-processing, and indication of ability to efficiently interface with customers/suppliers are a must. The candidate must have an aptitude for formulating hypothesis from numerical and experimental data, and designing/implementing experiments to prove them. All Mevicon employees must be able to document research with word processing and presentation (PowerPoint) software to explain/defend their ideas and conclusions drawn the experimental results. This position requires at least an undergraduate degree (masters preferred) in a technical field and, preferably several years of recent relevant experience. We are however open to considering recent/pending college graduates, if they have prior engineering work experience and excellent references.

Senior R&D Engineer

We are currently looking for experienced mechanical engineers to help us in our shell related R&D and product development activities. Detailed knowledge and recent practical experience (must be able to substantiate) in one or more of the following technical areas is required:

  • Mechanical Design/Prototyping
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • Thermal Analysis
  • Relevant Application Testing (General Mechanical, RF, Solar, Optics)

Analyst (Thermal and/or Structural)

We are currently looking for experienced thermal-structural analysts/consultants to help us in our R&D and product development. Specifically we are looking for analysts or consultants who are experienced in one or both of the following areas:

  • Thermal: Predicting steady state, slowly varying, and transient thermal distributions for large area/low thermal mass surfaces in a radiation transport dominated environment (i.e. on-orbit with solar Flux, planetary albedo/IR effects, and radiation to deep space)
  • Structural: Analysis of thin film shells (very high R/t ratios), including but not limited to, response to quasi-static loads (accelerations, rotations, thermal, pressure), structural dynamics, buckling limits/onset, buckling propagation, geometric, material, and temperature dependent nonlinearities.

Experience with the following a strong plus:

  • Modeling MLI material
  • Using MATLAB for pre and post processing and run automation
  • Experimental and or hands on background to complement analytical skills

Detailed Knowledge/Experience in any of the following application areas is an added advantage:

  • Space Hardware Design/Development/Demonstration

Ideal candidates will combine analysis and/or R&D experience with expertise in at least one application area. Excellent writing/documentation skills and ability to interface with internal team are a must. Thermal Desktop and ABACUS are the preferred software sets. Must be willing to sign NDA. If consulting, initial work/project load likely to be 15 to 20 hours/week with possibility to scale up to full time if match is right. To be considered, candidate must have at least 8+ years worth of relevant experience.

Prototype Support Technician

We are currently looking for hardware focused technicians to support our shell related R&D and product development activities. Detailed knowledge and practical experience in one or more of the following technical areas is required:

  • Mechanical Design/Prototype/Test
  • Actuation/Metrology/Control
  • Precision Photogrammetry, or
  • Relevant Application Area Testing (RF, Solar, Optics)

Experience in any of the following application areas is an added advantage:

  • Reflective RF Apertures
  • Solar Concentrators
  • Reflective Optics/Telescopes
  • Thin Film Solar Cells, Blanket Solar Arrays
  • Space Hardware Design/Development/Demonstration, or
  • Moderate volume production and shipping/receiving

The ideal candidate has worked in small research groups with multi-disciplinary teams and has practical mechanical design experience for test fixture design, testing expertise, and programming experience for data reduction and analysis. Experience with solid modeling packages (like SolidWorks) is desired as is a background in manufacturing techniques. Familiarity/comfort with programming/scripting languages such as Matlab in support of test post processing is a strong plus as is an affinity for photography.

The ideal candidate will combine small company and/or R&D experience with expertise in several of the above technical areas and at least one application area. While candidate will not necessarily be expected to plan tests, they will be expected to be able to perform/implement test plans, critically examine results, identify outliers and anomalies, and provide acceptable documentation. They must demonstrate a critical attention to detail, strong work ethic, and be a fast learner. Must also be willing to help out other R&D engineers wherever needed.

Depending on candidates we can consider either part or full time position. This might also be excellent position for college engineering students looking for an internship or part-time work during the semester or over the summer.

Part time Government Contract Negotiator/Administrator

Successful and growing small R&D company looking for experienced Federal Govt. Contract Negotiator/Manager who desires to work very part time to off-load the president from intermittent contract negotiations and contract compliance activities.

Must be experienced with buyer agency (strongly prefer experience with AF, DARPA, and NASA) and DCMA (particularly property management) and contracting standard practices and expectations. Familiarity with FARS, DFAR clauses related to FFP and CPFF R&D contracts, particularly those usually associated with SBIR, BAA, and NRA solicitations required. Familiarity with IP issues and standard contract Invention Disclosure filing protocols also a plus. This is not a bookkeeping/accounting position, but familiarity with Quickbooks, DCAA, DFAS, allowable/unallowable costs, and standard cost pools, a big plus. Similarly this is not a proposal or technical writing position but experience in those areas a plus. Relevant technical experience not required but experience with RF, Solar, and or optics also a plus, as is experience with space flight hardware)

Typical Job Duties could include, as needed,

New Contract Negotiation

  • Maintain ORCA database, Prepare Special Section K Reps and Certs, Asserted Rights documentation for Presidents review prior to submittal to buyer.
  • Gather required subcontractor assertions
  • Review Model Contract Terms for changes, Issues, Make recommendations/provide recommendations for requested changes/improvements

Contract Compliance/Close-out

  • Prepare Contract Briefs
  • Preparation and Filing DD-882
  • Property Management Compliance (ongoing practices and yearly audits and reports, plus contract close out surplusing, retitling, etc.)
  • Subcontractor negotiation and contracting
  • Monitor compliance of subcontractors with non-technical contract flowdown requirements

Must be effective friendly communicator with true desire to establish/maintain cordial relationships with Govt. buyers and representatives. Attention to detail is a must. Business Process System orientation and willingness to document and train/assist staff on implementation of proper procedures required. Candidate should have experience with and desire to work in a Small Company Environment.

After initial ramp-up period, average work load is likely to be no more than 10 to 20 hours per month, but during times of new contract negotiation, willingness to provide timely responsiveness will be essential in order to expedite contract award. Position likely able to work from home on flexible majority of the time, and will usually be low pressure/easily scheduled.
